Retrieving NASA docs with Melvyl

May 12, 2000

After a bout with the NASA Technical Reports Server, you're ready to retrieve the papers you've found. Davis has an incomplete, sporadic collection of NASA papers on microfiche. Here's how you might go about using Melvyl to find what you're looking for.

Let's say you're looking for TM-104257. The TMs are a series and 104257 is a fairly unique number (unlike, for example, 2, 7, or 12), so you can just hop into Melvyl and execute

f se 104257

Melvyl returns, among other things, the full name of the series.

Series: NASA technical memorandum ; 104257.
Before you check the holdings of that series, you can get some useful information with
d marc
I don't really know what all that stuff means, but close to the top there's...
037 N 93-11221 $b NASA <IG,CSL>
That's the N number of the document: 93-11221. That's worth noting because the N number is often used to catalog NASA docs.
